Project Overview
This project involved the production of precision CNC machined aluminum circular housing components featuring a large central bore, flange surfaces, mounting holes, bosses, and contoured structural features.
The combination of circular geometry, uneven material distribution, and multiple mounting features required careful control of machining sequence, rigidity, and dimensional relationships.
Machining Challenges
The primary challenge was maintaining dimensional consistency between the central bore, flange, and surrounding mounting features while controlling distortion during material removal.
Key machining considerations included:
- Maintaining concentricity of the central bore and circular features
- Controlling flange flatness and mating surfaces
- Accurate positioning of mounting holes and bosses
- Maintaining rigidity around thinner wall sections
- Controlling surface quality on visible machined areas
Our Solution
The machining process was planned around the central bore and primary flange surfaces to establish stable reference datums before secondary features were produced.
CNC milling was used for the circular profiles, mounting holes, bosses, pockets, ribs, and stepped surfaces. Roughing and finishing operations were sequenced to maintain rigidity and preserve critical feature relationships.
- Datum-based setup around the central bore and flange
- Progressive roughing to maintain part stability
- Precision finishing of critical bore and mating surfaces
- Controlled machining of holes, bosses, and pockets
- In-process verification of critical dimensions
Inspection & Quality Control
Inspection focused on the central bore, flange flatness, mounting-hole positions, and the positional relationship between critical features. Finished surfaces and edges were also visually checked before shipment.
- Central bore diameter and concentricity inspection
- Mounting-hole position verification
- Flange flatness inspection
- Feature depth and step-height checks
- Visual inspection of machined surfaces
Results
The completed CNC machined aluminum circular housing components achieved consistent geometry across the central bore, flange, mounting holes, bosses, and surrounding structural features.
Careful datum control and machining sequence planning helped maintain critical feature relationships while controlling distortion during machining.
The finished components showed clean machined surfaces, well-defined mounting features, and consistent geometry suitable for final assembly.
